I now want more milk teas. With pearl. Or maybe pudding. Some of that froth on top maybe? How about rock salt? Oh yes, milk tea is apparently good!
Don’t get me wrong. It’s not like I’ve never had milk tea before. I’ve had it a couple of times and I just didn’t care for it. I didn’t pay attention to what I was drinking. It’s a classic case of judging before tasting. I’ve always just gulped it down and never experienced it.
Until this year.
Now I’ve always preferred tea over coffee. It is lighter to drink and there is less guilt in drinking a cup of tea rather than coffee. But the main thing is that it is so refreshing to have. Even a hot pot of tea on a hot summer’s day is refreshing. It revitalizes your body like no other drink can. No wonder it is the most drank beverage around the world.
Then you add sizzle to it.
Ice. Milk. Your choice of add-ons such as tapioca pearls or sweet sweet pudding. Then you have a drink for that leaves a lasting impression.
I usually have this with other people. My now wife would order it with her sister so I’d have a cup as well. Or when I’m visiting Ho Chi Minh City and one of my officemates treat me to a cup, then I’m game. But, the first time I ordered a cup on my own, that’s when I knew I was hooked and this revelation came to light.
The perfect blend for me is tea strong enough to get through all that other flavour provided by the add-ons. Milk light enough to just give a fuller body to the drink. Then a hint of sweetness from either pudding or tapioca. As a last touch, I love some frothy rock salt on top of the drink to complete that bitter, sweet, and salty flavour.
Now that is a good cup of tea.
As for brands, I don’t really care much for it. As long as I am able to order a drink close to my preference. I’ve tried a lot of the brands all over Metro Manila. And I’ve had a couple of brands while in Taipei as well. They are all good in their own right but much like tea itself, everyone has their own way to enjoy it.
